| A case for "Classical" Conservationism |

| September 1, 2010 Classical Conservation. Wow, where to start. I suppose I should begin with the second definition of conservation I have repeated above from 1959. You might be surprised to find that if you were to open a newer dictionary today you will not find that definition, or anything similar. I certainly was. My father was a conservationist, my grandfather was a conservationist, my uncles are conservationists, and I myself am a conservationist. And the above was the perfect example of our definition of what conservation is. I love nature. I love to be out in the woods, or along the coast line. I remember Iron Eyes Cody (The crying Indian.) and the immense problem of smog in the Los Angeles Basin. I sang along with Woodsy the Owl and did my part to keep litter off our streets. Yes, I grew up in the 60s and 70s. We had two stickers on our kitchen window for anyone coming onto the porch and to our door to see. First, the American Flag, and second, the green "Ecology" flag (*see above). I grew up watching PBS and Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom", and my mother took me to our local college campus to be present and a part of the very first Earth Day. I, like Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir, believe and endorse the creation of our National Parks and the protective stewardship of our most threatened species. Given all that, I have to come back to the definition above of conservation. How have we come so far from the rational protection AND utilization of our natural places to the irrational proposition that nature must be hands off and any use made by man is inherently evil? The final straw for me is the world wide rush to press and codify the never to be challenged as gospel idea of the catastrophic and disastrous concept of man made global climate change. |
